An article published in the medical journal The Lancet Oncology made headlines last month when it announced that a group of experts from the World Health Organization recently ranked the radiation of mobile phone use as ” possibly carcinogenic to humans “, with a rating similar to DDT and the engine exhaust. While the consequences of this classification is widely disputed, experts recommend at least use a headset when talking on cell phones for a longer period. And most scientists agree that more research is needed. An easy to understand summary of the cancer research over the cell phone use can be found on the website of the National Cancer Institute. In a short summary, it is not clear yet what the relationship might be. We do not know enough to say that there is a relationship or not.

And what about texting? A 2010 article published in the Washington Post cited a study by the Pew Research Center found – in 800 adolescents supposed to be “representative” of the U.S. population – that teenage “girls typically send and receive 80 texts a day and the boys come in at 30 “This is not a small number! From the perspective of health, there have been several arguments about how texting can create new repetitive stress injuries that had been common before. An article in U. S. News and World Report back in 2009, commenting on studies that have shown that texting can cause pain and inflammation of the thumbs, hands, forearms, or even the neck.

It’s not just cell phones we are talking about, though. Statistics compiled by researchers in the summer of 2010 showed that 55% of Americans use the Internet every day, on average 60 hours / month online. If you put those hours back, you might spend online a whole month every year. Among certain age groups, this figure is much higher.
